I think this might impact the way that all of us feel about last weekend...
Mr. Vince Cantu came up to me and thanked me for the hard work behind the scenes. I thanked him and with a thousand things running through my head about the game, I began to walk away. He stopped me because he had more to say. I want to share this with you all, because you all played a part in what could be the kindest gift any of us could have bestowed on the Vets. I had to decompress to bring these words to life.
"Mr. Phelps, when we landed, we knew what we had to do. We knew what the other wanted to do to us. And when I was in the observation tent, I began to feel those days pulling me back."
I must have had a horrified look on my face, because I thought he was going to tell me that it was painful. He continued:
"Mr. Phelps, when the firefight broke out in Ia Drang, you coldn't see the bullets. You could only hear them whisk by, and they killed without you seeing them. Focusing on living made you ignore those you couldn't see, but you never forgot tracer fire. Those paintballs look like tracers."
I was convinced now that we really screwed up by having them watch us play paintball. Then he looked straight into my eyes with a stare that I won't ever forget...
"Mr. Phelps, today I got to replace those tracers with people showing their respects for us and having a good time at camp. I could never repay you for the therapy "
Guys, I could only nod my head because my mouth didn't work. I should have started the thread with this.
